Did you ever ask yourself the above question before starting to code? It’s a crucial introspection that often gets overshadowed by the allure of high salaries and trendy career choices. Throughout my university life at RMIT and beyond, I have come across people majoring in CS or planning to major in CS and become Software Engineers but who end up pursuing different careers. I have drawn a conclusion from interacting with these people about why they intend to major in CS or become SWE. The reasons are below:

  1. High Remuneration as a Motivator: The software engineering industry pays high remuneration, and if I become a SWE, I will earn 10x 🤩.
  2. Following the Trend: After high school, people look for subjects to major in, and as CS is a trendy one, it’s good to go for it. Moreover, my best friend is doing it, so why not?
  3. The “Cool” Factor: I think I will look cool having two monitors and 24/7 making the keyboard sound in front of people.

The initial enthusiasm often fades away as individuals face the complexities of the tech ecosystem. I strongly discourage choosing this career solely for the reasons mentioned above. Trust me, you will not be able to sustain yourself in this career for a long time if you don’t have a passion for it.

I hope you guys have figured out why the number of engineers is less than graduates.

Let’s inspire a shift in perspective. Share your thoughts on what truly fuels your passion for software engineering! 💻🚀
